Is it true that having more babies is perceived as being more virile? More manly? |
In attempting to write this entry, I scratched my head, my chin, and a few other bodily parts, trying hard to re-call at what age did I first understood about the 'Birds and the Bees!' I could not. However I recalled that at some early phase in my life, I was made to believe that 'babies' actually came out of bamboo plants. It was however only for a short period, for very soon after, I was told about the 'Birds and the Bees' by the same person who came up with the 'Anak Buluh Betong story'.
So from very early age, I was told, people get married to produce babies!
I actually learned about human's reproduction much later through formal education when I studied biology in secondary school.
That was the time, I kept worrying whether or not I would be able to produce the sperms needed to produce a baby! The thought of not being able to produce a baby was a scary thought.
As a teenager, I used to include in my prayer, "Ya Allah panjang kan usia aku supaya aku sempat berkahwin!" The motive however was different. My prayer was not so much because I wanted to create the next generation of human race, but more driven by some shoddy stories i read in Majalah 'Mesra'.
To be blatantly honest, I did not want to die until I have had the chance to experience the pleasure of sexual intercourse.
I finally got married in 1983. The experience of 'Malam Pertama' will remain as a sacred secret for my wife and I. Suffice to say, I was so grateful that my prayers were answered! Thus to many teasing questions from my friends and relatives, "How was it?" I always gave an honest reply of, "If I knew how good it is, I would have married long time ago!"
I completely forgotten about my adolescence anxiety about whether or not I could produce babies! All I remember was the pleasure of 'sexual experience'.
Perhaps, that was how nature intended it to be. The motive for human is to have sex, for the pleasure of it, and as a consequence rather than a primary objective, come babies.
Or, could it be that the primary motivation for human race is to copulate for the sake of producing babies, in which case they care not for the pleasure of sexual intercourse. Thus perhaps, in the older days, couples did not get depress, like they tend to do today, simply because they could not experience an orgasm!

I still have some level of doubt as to what is the primary objective as intended by nature; to re-produce or to have sexual pleasures!
However, I know one thing is true. As I got older, and have passed a certain age barrier, I consciously decided not to have any more children.
I also know for a fact that for as long as I live, I will be needing the kind of pleasures which TLC (Tender Loving Care) and loving intimacy can provide.
