Living abroad makes us appreciate friendship amongst Malaysians. Having been in the Middle East for nearly nine years now, my wife and I have always enjoyed having friends over to our home - for sembang2 and makan2. As long as our friends do not mind our 'sempoi and informal way', we are only too happy to welcome them. At our house, there are no protocols - our guests are treated as brothers and sisters. We are doing just fine~!
It has been three weeks since we moved in the new house, living outside of the compound. So far so good. All the teething problems have been resolved. Alhamdullilah.
Having a second car for the use of the family and a private driver, have given the much needed freedom of movement for Aishah and my boys.

Jalan Jalan Cari Mesjid - part 4. Al Ain!!
Anakanda ku ADLIL juga menulis di sini.
Peserta: Adlil, Khairul Affendi, Urs truly, Yusree, Hasnol, Imran, Lutfi, dan Mushil (not in above picture)
Jalan Jalan cari Mesjid - Part 1 : Fujeirah
Beautiful pictures as captured by Sdr ZBA - Here.
Two 'summer bachelor' friends and two 'friends with limited visit visa from their wives' joined my son Ad and I today - exploring Fujeirah. Our target today was to stop at seven Mosques and offer prayers at each one. We did just that, including a stop at the 562 year old Al-Bidyah Mosque.

Al Bidyah Mosque above.
Below is KP in prayer at our second stop over. Most mosques in UAE do not normally have names.
Below, captured moments of rejoicing at the end of the trip - at Nik's abode. We were treated to delicious fried Macaroni and ever so refreshing 'Iced cold Longan drink'. Thank you NiK for being so gracious with your hospitality.
On the trip were: Mr ZBA, Hasnol, Adie = click their names to go to their blogs, and also Imran dan KP ( both have no blogs ).

A week ago I wrote about projek 'bujang musim panas' ingin menjelajah UAE menziarah sebanyak mungkin Mesjid. Six of us did just that last Friday July 4th. For this time, we focused on Fujeirah.

Kereta baru untuk keluarga!
When we were living in the security compound, we managed with one car. If anyone from the family wished to go anywhere while I was at work, there was a limousine service available from the compound itself. One phone call to the reception office - khalash, everything arranged!
Now, not only we need a private driver, we also need a second car.

The after effect of Budu !
I am the first to wake up. It is 2.30am. The three of us must have fallen asleep on the sofa with the CNN channel still reporting about what is going on in the Gadafi's land. We must have been very tired! Must be. How else could three guys who are full of life, and full of good food dozed off in awkward postures while in full conversation. Mat Ju and Zainal must have left when we stopped responding to what they were saying.
| The Budu Effect~! Pengsan wa cakap lu...hahaha. |
The last sentence I remember saying is, "I know....~!"
I couldn't even remember what I was responding to! So often when I found myself not paying attention but a responce is expected, I would blurt out something like, "I know.." or "Yea, so true!", or "I Understand.."
The fact is, "No, I don't know. No, I don't understand! I just want to sleep!" hahaha

Driving with a Ghutra over my head!
Out of the blue today, I felt like putting on a Ghutra ( Saudi head cover for men, melayu calls Serban) before driving out with my wife.
While stuck in a massive traffic jam (the local schools have started their one week holiday), I realized that other drivers were giving me way like I have never experienced before. Cars actually slowed down to let me pass! Very unusual indeed.

Tempe!
Pertama kali dulu sewaktu menyambut Aidil Fitri.
Ahah, pasti enakkkkk makan bersama nasi panas. Isteri pula kali ini memasukkan ikan bilis bersama goreng Tempe berlada......adushhh, sedappp sihh!!
Kepada Rini, terimakasih. Sebenarnya aku telah pun mengucapkan terimakasih kepadanya. Tapi terimakasih daun keladi, jika di beri mahu lagi !!! hehehe.
Terlalu kerap memakan Tempe, aku sendiri kadang2nya bertutur umpama cowot Indonesia! Tak begitu Pak Hasnol.....?? hehehehe.

Friendship ...on foreign soil!
" He who has a thousand friends has not a friend to spare,
And he who has one enemy will meet him everywhere".
Ali ibn-Abi-Talib, A Hundred Sayings
(602 AD - 661 AD)
And he who has one enemy will meet him everywhere".
Ali ibn-Abi-Talib, A Hundred Sayings
(602 AD - 661 AD)
I lived four years in Singapore between 2000 to end of 2003. How many Singaporean friendship did I make and developed? How many are still flourishing today? While I was there I made a few friends in the office ~ but friendship was very much limited to office matters. A few years after leaving Singapore, I am hardly in touch with any of them. Much to my regrets....which has led to one of my new year resolutions for 2009: that is to rejuvenate old friendships worth keeping.
After Singapore, I lived in Jeddah for four years between 2003 and 2007. Perhaps learning from the missed opportunities from Singapore days, we made extra effort to befriend locals and other expats living in Saudi. One year after leaving the holy land of Saudi we're pleased to say a few friendships are still blossoming! Today for instance we received Mr B and his family visiting us ~ one of the true friendships which has sustained the test of time and distance. Today's reunion brings a lot of joy to us, especially my wife. She and Mrs B have developed into a close friendship ~ cross-culture ~ sharing and exchanges of recipes and cuisines during their frequent meetings. Those were the good old days in Jeddah.
Cross-culture friendship requires extra effort to start, and requires understanding and open mind and heart to develop. One need to appreciate diversity and its values in order to sustain such relationship.
By being a friend of Mr. B, I learnt that for Arabs hospitality towards guests is of utmost important! Food is prepared in abundance! Every time we were invited for meals, their dining table were filled to the brim - lots and lots of food and almost all were home cooked! To them, it is about giving the best to their guests. Such is the Saudi way!
I also learn that a visit should not be done in a hurry. There is a proper visiting etiquette to be followed ~ tea or Arabic coffee upon arrival, normally taken with dates. Light conversation follows, and the subject is nearly always about family well being. Men talk with men, and women with women. Praising the cooking or anything to do with women of the house is not appropriate for another man to do! Always praise only the men of the house. All praises, must always be followed with exclamation of "MasyAAllah!" to ward off Syaitan from disturbing the praised.

Prayer time is respected. When call prayer is heard, then men are expected to perform prayer immediately. I found it very convenient to go visiting with my condition already in Wudu'.
After being invited to the dining table, you are expected to stop at the sink to wash hands and wipe dry. Then be seated. Always wait for the man of the house to start. He will normally serve you...personally. Eat heartily!! Arabs love it when their guests like their food. Always decline anymore extra offerings with a "Alhamdullillah!" Please stop when full, otherwise the hosts are obliged to continue eating with you.
And what they say about crossing legs is true. For fear of risking putting up the soles of your feet towards the hosts, it is best advised not to sit cross legged in the presence of Arabs. Showing the soles of one's feet is considered more than rude, it is taboo! Similarly, never pass or accept anything with left hand. Also, some Arabs are quite particular that you only use right hands for bring food or water to your mouth. These are quite similar with our Malaysian way, so not much problem there.

As much as I learn his way and his culture, he too have been interested to learn Malaysian way of hosting guests. However, we err on following the culture of the place we live in as much as possible when interacting with the local people. Therefore while in the Middle East, we have been inclined to follow their way, both as guests in their home or as hosts to them in ours.
So, we had dinner tonight with the Mr B's family. Step by step...lots of conversation, and revisiting the good old days.

I wish I have more friends from the local community where ever I live. Just ask ourselves and be honest with the answers: "How many of us Malaysians in Dubai have friends from the local community ?"
If not, why not??
"Is it not a waste of opportunity to spend all these time abroad and only to be concerned with ourselves and other Malaysians. True "Birds of same feathers tend to flock together" but.....
Would it not add to our and our children's development and spice our lives more if we occasionally flock with birds of slightly different species?? Especially the locals"

I close my entry with the above questions.

TKC 3 : STAR 1 : Budak Kolej 0 !!!!
Latest: TKC 3 : STAR 1+1 (Tonight one of my former classmates from STAR ~ batch75 ~ came visiting. He is on a vacation in Dubai with his family, and also visiting his niece who is residing here on the Palm! ).
Above: Nazrah and her princess Aishah. Top: Pakwan and Pakpayne!
One of our joys living abroad is when friends and relatives come visiting! Their visit provide us with an opportunity to catch up with the latests, to get fresh supply of budu, tempoyak , daun kesum, presented with the odd ole-ole from home, get to read latest copies of printed Malaysian newspapers and magazines, and best of all rekindling memories of yester-years with new twists and fresh perceptions.
LiL and I have been fortunate! And the score for December is infact , LiL 3 Vesus Mine 1. Yes, we have received three of LiL's TKC buddies versus one of mine from STAR. Regardless, her friends are my friends and mine are also hers. Such is the simple rule of cobweb of marriages; you marry into the network of relationships from both sides. I heard one more of my STAR friends is coming to town! So, I am still optimistic of equalizing the score.
LiL and Dato' Zurai were batch mates! Puan Siti was their senior but it was hard to tell that fact if not for the information volunteered to me ~ and I said this as a compliment to Puan Siti for keeping her vitality (The Boss of the vitality capsules is herself a showcase for the product lah kan!) and this statement is in no way intended to imply that her Juniors were anything but as youthful and full of vigour too! Gosh, why am I justifying myself here! One thing for sure, happiness was visible on everyone!
Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Umi Kalthum Ngah and her husband Ir. Mohd Sufian who were on a short vacation in Dubai. I came to know Umi Kalthum through her blog "Biasanembun.blogspot" and also as an author of a few novels and childrens' motivational stories. She brought two 'signed' copies of her books! Thank you. LiL had known Umi from TKC days while Ir. Mohd Sufian was my batch mate from STAR! Needless to say, an evergreen friendship.
We accompanied our guests of last week and of today to the Global Village which is located a stone's throw from our residence.
School buddies reunited at the Arabian Ranches!
To our guests, we thank you for visiting us! Your presence brought joy and happiness and hopefully will also rejuvenate our friendships! Please come again.....
ps: To friends not from TKC or STAR, with the exception of Budak Kolej Melayu *wink wink*, you are equally welcomed! Read HERE, if you want to understand what has been going on between STARians and the Budak Kolej!

We are going to Istanbul....
Luqman was overwhelmed with the two plates of brownie and icecreams!!
Luqman was seen having a go on a super bike at the game arcade! As planned, the family got together for a TGiF dinner last Saturday to discuss and choose 'Vacation Destination'. Everyone did their homework of researching the destinations assigned to them. Children's involvement in planning for vacation is part of tradition for the family. In fact, we have involved our children in most major decisions affecting them - including decision to relocate, choosing a house, choosing schools, etc.

It was a decision early in our parenthood - that we decided to practice a few family values.
One of them is 'participative decision making'. We encourage our children to gather information, be able to discuss their views openly, and be able to accept the final decision and support it wholeheartedly. As part of their development, they have learned to be tolerant of others views and accept rejection without taking it personally. Both tolerance and acceptance require practice and coaching. As parents, LiL and I encouraged use of logic and civil arguments based on facts rather than winning an argument by raising one's voice or relying on aggressive behaviors.
This time around, the topic was 'vacation destination'! By involving them early, we have created the buzz and excitement about the vacation well before the departure date. This in itself provides a good conversation subject. And I believe, that a family needs to have good conversation subjects which bind members of the family together.
Shared plates of starters, main courses, and two plates of brownie with ice creams later - we have agreed on Istanbul as our December vacation destination. It was a close choice between Masai Mara Safari and Istanbul. We decided a better time to visit Masai Mara will be between July to September when the Wilder beast makes their annual migration!!
The ball is now in my court - to book airline tickets!

Dah mood cuti cuti Malaysia...

I am ready for cuti-cuti Malaysia. I am counting the hours to be with that young man pictured above. My bags are not yet packed, but I am ready to go. In my mind I breath Malaysian air, listen to raindrops, the aroma of Malaysian bakeries tempts me. I eagerly await the announcement, "Kepada warganegara Malaysia kami mengucapkan selamat pulang!" I want to go home....
.
Except for make belief moments when we live on foreign soil, Malaysia is home! As they say, home is where one's heart is. For me - my heart has never left Malaysia. To be more precise, my heart has never left my birth place in one kampung in Kelantan. The sight and sound of a kampung life remains in a kampung boy's heart forever. I will travel a thousand mile to revisit and re-live scenes of golden padi stalks dancing to the evening breeze, sound of birds chirping and chicken clucking and be able to drink cool water from a well....
I have adjusted very well to foreign soils whenever I am, living the life to the full while at the same time always learning about life itself. I have been disturbed and dissappointed with some news I read about home. Despite and maybe even because of all that are happening - I yearn to be home even more.
My kampung, like most kampung wakes up to morning sun with simple hope and pure enthusiasm. As the sunset brings amber hue on the horizon, a sense of peace and tranqulity sets in. Adzan from nearby mosques can be heard and everyone find their way to a prayer place. In a kampung home, it is still very common to see a father leading his whole family in prayers.
In my excitement about going home, I called a few friends. While driving to work yesterday, I called pakzawi. And he made this announcement here.
Since my vacation time is short, only eighteen days, I have to maximize how I use the time. Planning is important. Therefore, being clear with big items I want to accomplish is key. Alhamdullilah, after a few phone calls and some pondering, I think I have a plan. Lil has also endorsed the plan!
.
First two days: In KL. Priorities during these two days, to visit sites of my property investment under construction. Also to show real estate agents and potential buyers the cendana condo for which I will be getting the keys on the day of my arrival. I will be stopping over in Shah Alam from the airport to visit the Bukit Jelutong project site, and will be calling2 PB and nurazzah8 too ( if she is free ) for a quick teh tarik dan roti telur!
If there are friends who would like to meet me, I can be found at the Cendana Condo ( attached to the Rennaisance Hotel by a bridge ) on 9th August from 10am to 4pm. You may call 013-3603099.
.
Next six days: Going 'home' to my kampung. We have chosen to drive via the East Coastal route. Maklang has kindly invited us to stop over for lunch. Thank you maklang! I am hoping to also meet up with Silversarina dan Mulan while passing through Kemaman and Kerteh.
We will be spending one night in KT - adakah blogger yang sudi bertemu di sana?
.
Five days following that we will be in KL. I want to visit dear sister Dalilah, InsyAAllah. There will be many appointments to settle numerous official businesses. These five days will be hectic for me. I will try to make time to meet up with friends old and new. One of new friends I wish to meet is ummuasiah, to listen to her perjuangan yang belum selesai. Mamarock, ummie365, the Queen, if you are free let us have a cuppa too....Dah dekat tu dengan KLCC!
.
The next three days will be quiet and quality time enjoying one of the Malaysian resorts. Luqman has been waiting for the time we can build sand castle, splash sea water, and enjoy some water sports.
It will a short vacation, but InsyAAllah it will be one which will renew old relationships and start new ones. It will one where some pending business issues will be settled. I pray that it will be one which will be blessed by Him. InsyAAllah....
PS: Jokontan, GAB, please calling2 - hopefully we can meet. Maybe you can come to my 'condo open viewing' on 9th Aug tu.....Mummy Rizq & Syana have confirmed they will make an effort to be there and Dr Bubbles said he will try to come.

Isra' Mi'Raj - Di Dubai
Alhamdullillah, selamat semuanya.
Isra Mi'raj, peristiwa di mana Rasullullah telah diperlihatkan a complete vision of the beginning, the present, the whole journey, and the end of all creations.
Wajib!!! Must!!! .
Wajib!!! Must!!! .
.
